| This website is dedicated to the care and feeding of my latest and greatest acquisiton to date, a 1975 BMW 2002. Part of the reason for creating this website is to provide an outlet for sharing the joy and frustration of owning these unque automobiles. I have owned nine 2002's over the years and have a story to tell about each one, some good, some bad. I also wanted to document my experiences during the conversion of this car to S-14 power. Hopefully, my journal can help someone else find and build their dream car. Lastly, like any proud owner, I needed a placeholder to show off the pictures of my new "baby". I promise not to bore you too much. Several people have inquired about buying it. Like the rest of my toys, everything is for sale, for the right price I'm always open to interesting offers. | I have been looking for a candidate for doing an BMW M2 conversion (E-30 M3 S-14 Engine in a 2002) after deciding not to convert my 1971 BMW 1600 Voll Cabriolet. My requirements were very specific. I wanted to find a 4-speed, 1974 or 1975 BMW 2002 with an outstanding exterior and interior, but with poor or non-running mechanicals. How hard could it be? Well, as it turned out, pretty darn hard. After about a year of daily Craigslist, E-Bay, 2002Faq, Roadfly, Bimmers.com, Autotrader, and San Diego Union/Tribune searches, I finally saw an ad on Craigslist for a 1975 BMW 2002 with a bad transmission for $1800. Assuming that this was probably an automatic because 4-speeds rarely break, I called the owner to get some more information. After talking to Sue, who turned out to be the original owner, I found out that the car was indeed a 4-speed and had been towed to Furguson's Garage in Encinitas, CA. I told Sue that I would drive over and check it out on my lunch hour. While driving from Mission Valley to Encinitas, I kept telling myself not to get too excited, the car was probably trashed from all those years near the beach. I got to Furguson's Garage and found the car on the lift with the transmission out. The bottom of the car was very clean and tidy. It did have a slight dent in the gas tank, but the spare tire well was rust-free. When I finally got the car lowered by one of the mechanics, my heart skipped a beat. This was one of the cleanest 2002's I have seen in over a year. The interior was immaculate, with a crack-free dash and beautiful seat covers. The exterior paint was clean, shiny and for the most part, original. The panels were straight and all the trim was in great shape. |
The car isn't without some flaws. The sunroof drainage tubes have begun to do damage to the front rockers and front lower passenger door is starting to show a rust bubble. It looks like it was hit on the driver's door at some point because the new paint doesn't quite blend with the original paint near the rear passenger window. I called Sue when I got back to the office and made her an offer. She thought about it for a long 10 seconds and said "OK, you've got a deal" . Boy, did I ever get a deal! After almost a year of looking, my hard work and patience finally paid off in spades. |
